Short answer: drop is a bat's length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 31-inch bat that weighs 22 ounces is a drop 9, written -9. The bigger the number, the lighter the bat for its length. A -10 is lighter than a -8, which is lighter than a -3.

That's the whole formula. The rest of this guide covers what each drop is for, how to pick one, how to pick a length, and what your league allows.

Drop weight chart: what each drop means

Drop Example Who swings it
-13 to -12 26" / 13–14 oz Tee ball and coach pitch, ages 4–7. Also the lightest fastpitch bats for 8U–10U.
-11 29" / 18 oz Youth baseball ages 7–10. Very common in fastpitch for 10U–12U and contact hitters of any age.
-10 30" / 20 oz The default. Most youth baseball players 8–12, and the most popular fastpitch drop from 12U through high school and college.
-9 32" / 23 oz Mostly a fastpitch drop: stronger high school and college hitters who want more mass than a -10 without losing much bat speed. Rare in baseball.
-8 31" / 23 oz Baseball ages 11–13 stepping up from -10. The heaviest common fastpitch drop, for power hitters.
-5 31" / 26 oz Baseball ages 12–13. The bridge to BBCOR.
-3 33" / 30 oz BBCOR. Required in high school and college baseball, and now the USSSA national standard at 14U. Most wood bats are about -3 too.

What is a drop 9 bat?

A drop 9 weighs nine ounces less than its length in inches: a 33-inch drop 9 weighs 24 ounces, a 32 weighs 23, a 31 weighs 22. You'll see it mostly on fastpitch softball bats, where it sits between the standard -10 and the power hitter's -8. If a -10 feels like a toothpick but a -8 drags, a -9 is the fix.

Listed weights are nominal. Grip, end cap and manufacturing tolerances mean a bat can weigh half an ounce to an ounce more on a scale. That's normal and not a defect.

How to pick the right drop

Age Baseball Fastpitch softball
4–6 -12 to -13.5 -12 to -13
7–8 -11 to -12 -11 to -13
9–10 -10 to -11 -11 to -12
11–12 -10 to -8 -10 to -11
13 -8 to -5 -10
14 and up -3 (BBCOR) -10, or -9 / -8 for stronger hitters

The 20-second test: have the player hold the bat by the handle straight out to the side, arm parallel to the ground. If the barrel dips before 20 seconds, go up a drop (lighter).

Signs the bat is too heavy: late on fastballs, barrel dropping below the hands, everything hit to the opposite field, a swing that gets long and loopy by the third at-bat. Signs it's too light: out in front of everything, rolling over ground balls to the pull side, and a player who is clearly strong enough to handle more.

Heavier is not automatically more power. Exit speed comes from bat speed and mass together, and for most youth hitters bat speed is what's missing. Move down in drop when the player is controlling the current bat easily, not because of a birthday.

What your league allows

  • High school and college baseball: -3 BBCOR only.
  • USSSA baseball 14U: BBCOR -3 or wood became the national standard on January 1, 2026. Some local events still allow -5.
  • USSSA baseball 13U: -8 or heavier (-8, -5 or -3).
  • USSSA 12U and under, Little League, Cal Ripken and other USA Baseball leagues: no drop limit. The stamp is what matters.
  • Fastpitch softball: no drop limits at any level. Pick by strength.

How to pick the right length

Player height Bat length
Under 3'4" 24–26"
3'5" – 3'8" 26–27"
3'9" – 4'0" 27–28"
4'1" – 4'4" 28–29"
4'5" – 4'8" 29–30"
4'9" – 5'0" 30–31"
5'1" – 5'4" 31–32"
5'5" – 5'8" 32–33"
5'9" and up 33–34"

Two quick checks: stand the bat against the leg and the knob should reach the hip; put the knob at the center of the chest and the fingertips should reach the end cap. Between sizes, go shorter. When a player moves to a heavier drop, dropping an inch in length for a season keeps the swing weight manageable. More detail on our bat sizing chart.

Slowpitch is different

Every adult slowpitch bat is 34 inches, so nobody talks about drop. Bats are sold by weight, 25 to 30 ounces. If you want the math anyway: a 26 oz bat is a -8, a 27 oz is a -7, a 28 oz is a -6. What matters far more is whether the bat is balanced or end-loaded, which changes how heavy it swings. See the slowpitch bat buying guide.

Why two bats with the same drop feel different

Drop only tells you total weight. It doesn't tell you where the weight sits. A balanced 31"/21 oz bat and an end-loaded 31"/21 oz bat are both -10, but the end-loaded one swings heavier because more of its mass is out in the barrel. One-piece alloy bats also tend to feel heavier than two-piece composites at the same listed weight. If a player is moving down a drop, a balanced two-piece makes the jump easier.

Frequently asked questions

What does drop mean on a bat?

Drop is the bat's length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 30-inch bat that weighs 20 ounces is a drop 10, written -10. The higher the drop number, the lighter the bat is for its length. It means the same thing on baseball and softball bats.

What is a drop 9 bat?

A drop 9 bat weighs nine ounces less than its length in inches, so a 32-inch drop 9 weighs 23 ounces. It is most common in fastpitch softball, for stronger hitters who want more mass than a standard -10.

Is a drop 10 or a drop 8 heavier?

A drop 8 is heavier. At the same length, a -8 weighs two ounces more than a -10. A 31-inch -10 weighs 21 ounces and a 31-inch -8 weighs 23.

What drop should a 12-year-old use?

In baseball, most 12-year-olds swing a -10, and stronger players should start moving to a -8 to prepare for -5 and BBCOR. In fastpitch, most 12-year-olds swing a -10 or -11.

What drop is a BBCOR bat?

Every BBCOR bat is a drop 3. A 33-inch BBCOR bat weighs 30 ounces and a 32-inch weighs 29.

What drop is a 26 oz slowpitch bat?

All adult slowpitch bats are 34 inches, so a 26-ounce bat is a drop 8. Slowpitch bats are sold by weight rather than drop.

Does a heavier bat hit the ball farther?

Only if the player can swing it just as fast. Batted ball speed depends on both bat mass and bat speed, and most youth players lose more from a slower swing than they gain from the extra weight.
